The Story Behind the Name
Hey Miss may seem like a strange name for a design business, but it all stems from my teaching background. I started teaching high school right out of college. I was barely twenty-two years old but thankfully was built with a grandma aged soul, so I seemed older to my students. My first school may not have been on the most sought after list of places to work for many people, but I loved it and wouldn’t change how I started out. It shaped me as an educator and as a person in a way I will always be grateful for.
It was at this school where my name changed. I was no longer Miss Baze (my maiden name) here. I was Hey Miss. When students had a question: “Hey Miss, could you help me with…” When students wanted to tell me something about their lives: “Hey Miss, I have to tell you what happened this weekend…” This way of addressing a teacher may seem disrespectful to some of you reading this, but I assure you it was anything but. It was just the way.
Over the years, I have moved states and changed schools, but the type of school I worked in remained much the same, considered “underprivileged” by common vernacular. I understand this phrase, but it’s not my favorite. I have issues with this phrase for many reasons, mostly because I feel it predestines kids to a certain level of achievement which they are capable of superseding, but that is not the topic of discussion here, so I’ll move on.
